This small country (23000 km2), despite
the fact that it does not vary much in elevation still
offers a considerable variety of habitats (high humid
forest at 1000m, pine forest, tropical dry forest,
mangrove, savanna, swamps and of course the Atlantic
coast with the longest coral reef in the world after
Australia.
65 bird families are represented in Belize with a
total list of around 750 bird species of which more
than 300 are resident. The endemic species of Yucatan
that one can see in Belize are shared with its neighbour,
Mexico.
The sites we will explore during our birdwatching
tour are essentially located in the Northern half
of the country:
