The major interest of birding trips to the West
Indies resides in the endemic species, but we sure
will not overlook, at least during the migration seasons,
the important number of migrants passing through or
wintering.
Puerto
Rico (8960 km2) is a very popular destination for
birdwatchers as it is possible to see all the island
endemics species in a short time period thanks to
the excellent road network.
Among the 250 total bird species of Puerto Rico,
13 are endemics.
Frequent flights between Puerto Rico and the Dominican
Republic allow to visit both islands on a two weeks
trip.
Coastal plain plains surround almost the whole island,
the centre of which is a rugged landscape. The highest
point of Puerto Rico reaches 1338m.
The natural habitats found on the island are essentially
forests of three different types: deciduous, semi-evergreen
and evergreen rain forests. Elfin woods occurs at
high altitude. Thorn scrubs are found in the South-West.
Coastal habitats range from mangrove-lined mudflats,
saline lagoons, beaches and cliffs.

| Less focused tours can
be planned for groups or individuals who wish
to concentrate on the cultural or
other wildlife aspect of the country (although
in no way are these ignored on our standard
bird watching
